The purpose of this report is to summarize research I undertook in preparation for a series of original recordings. My aim was to make an EP inspired by genres that I had always wanted to delve into, including Americana, blues, and folk. For this project I drew inspiration from the Grammy-winning album Sound & Color (2015) by Alabama Shakes as well as the solo guitar recording of Leo Kottke (1969). Sound & Color served as an essential guide because it contains a balance of retro nostalgia and modern pop sensibilities. It captures the rootsy American rock lineage, while sounding fresh and modern at the same time. Much of my research centered on the production team behind this record: Blake Mills (producer) and Shawn Everette (engineer). By studying this creative duo's techniques, preferred gear, and overall approach, I was able to draw insights and direction for my own recording process. I also looked at other techniques utilized in these genres including on Kottke's seminal album 6- and 12- String Guitar to gain additional insights. Hopefully some of what I learned can be of use to others who are interested in pursuing a sound drawing from similar influences.
